Photography Project

"It was important the item was found on a street for it to be authentic to Klein's work, so I roamed the streets of London looking for something, anything, that could be seen to fulfil my aims. Outside a bar, just off of Oxford Street, my attention was drawn towards a glinting surface in the gutter. It was a shattered wine glass, discarded by an anonymous individual. As I looked down I could see my reflection in its cracked exterior – comparative to the many photos Klein of strangers reflections in various signage/shop fronts. The wine glass allows the viewer to glance at their reflection, however it is somewhat distorted by the curvature of the glass, comparative to the blurring of Klein's snapshot style photographs. As well as the immediacy provided by using a found object (there is no creation time other than finding the object, similar to a photograph whereby the act of taking the photo only takes 1/125th of a second whereas finding the right angle can take hours) there is also the spontaneity held within the object and the act of finding it. Similar to Klein taking photographs of a person through a crowd as they spontaneously appear between the parting masses, the act of finding the object by chance relates back to the main theme of instantaneous moments."
